Gardening in the alpine biome
This biome is known for its dryness, low temperatures, and short growing season, so planting a garden requires patience and a lot of manure. Being that a mountain range has a variety of different sub-regions, it is essential to chose a spot that will have the best conditions for your garden to thrive. This being a west-facing slop of a gulch, to ensure the most sunlight is on your garden during the day, as well as being protected by the high winds that can occur during all hours. With this perfect niche, you will be able to grow anything from turnips and potatoes to onions, garlic or herbs.
The soil of the Alpine Biome isn't naturally nutritional or best suited for the needs of various common plants, vegetables or flowers, rather having the native green works being adapted to the underdeveloped soil that is found in many parts of a given mountain. Plants need to adapt to low oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, high UV levels, low pollinator diversity, drought, summer frosts, as well as the barely adequate soil.
When gardening in this biome you can plant a variety of crops, but the most sustainable plants that can thrive here are deep rooted, have a deep taprot and/or are low growing plants. If you want to build a garden you must be aware that you need to create good conditions for plants not natural to the environment.
Suggestions for the crops best suited to the environment would be underground plants such as potatoes and carrots, assuming you create good soil for the garden. The delicate nature in this environment would need to be considered when trying to plant any food. Flowers that are adapted to the environment could be planted to thrive and make a beautiful addition to your home.
To avoid soil erosion you need to ensure that the soil is well protected and that you could create stable soil for your plants to grow. With a bare side of the mountain plants wouldn't be able to last with wind ruining the chance. Also not planting near a direct water source would help.
Good luck and happy planting!
